Reviews

This atlas offers complete coverage of the grape varieties in California and the Northwest. After an introduction, user's notes, and an explanation of the U.S. appellation system, California's three wine-producing regions are divided into chapters, with subchapters arranged by county. The Pacific Northwest, however, is treated as one region, with the subchapters devoted to Washington and Oregon. A wine critic for such magazines as California , Thompson knows his West Coast territory. He gives the reader geographical and historical data on the individual wineries, as well a brief course on each one's specialties, which takes the place of the rating charts often found in wine encyclopedias. Excellent maps and climate charts, plus addresses and phone numbers of all the producers are also provided. For popular wine and travel collections.
