This collection of some 500 alphabetically arranged entries, about U.S. criminals and related topics is difficult to assess as a reference source since the review copy lacked the introduction, photos, and bibliography. Kurland ( The Spymaster's Handbook , Facts on File, 1988) has an interest in con men; otherwise, his selections are haphazard. The Leopold-Loeb case, the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, and the FBI are the lengthiest choices. Despite a roster of Mafioso, the infamous John Gotti is missing. The unsolved "Zodiac" murders, circa 1970, are here, but the more recent unsolved "Green River Killer" murders are not. While this work has some value, other true crime compilations--e.g., Jay Robert Nash's Encyclopedia of World Crime ( LJ 8/90)--seem preferable.
