From Library Journal:

For over 200 years, The Old Farmer's Almanac has dispensed a variety of remedies, advice, recipes, and lore of every sort. This collection presents the best of that myriad lot. It covers a comprehensive range of topics, from personal hygiene to gardening to rope-skipping. Did you know, for instance, why clams are characterized as being happy? Neither did writer Tim Clark, but he makes a couple of good suggestions. George Washington's eggnog recipe calls for brandy, whiskey, rum, and sherry and concludes with the directive "Taste frequently." There's something for everyone in this enjoyable volume. If the text doesn't beguile you, the whimsical photos and woodcuts certainly will. Recommended for all public libraries, especially rural ones.

From Publishers Weekly:

The Old Farmer's Almanac has been around since 1792, and Hale has edited it for the past quarter-century, assembling this compendium from various issues but admittedly with more than a little Procrustean pulling and tugging to fit some items in. The result, which Hale recommends reading piecemeal, is bright and entertaining. It delves into such subjects as whether a clam is really happy, all the while presenting nuggets like "Only the young die good" and giving recipes for cheesecake, eggnog (courtesy, G. Washington) and Democratic Cake. Occasional quaint entries reappear from the past, like the 1853 instruction to homemakers to separate the books of male and female authors on their shelves.
