Grade 4-5-A snobby young girl, Samantha Tillman, is forced to associate with the locals when she is transferred from a ritzy private academy to the public school where her mother is principal. She is placed in "crack-the-whip" McCracken's class; there, torn between wanting to be sent back to her old school and wanting to make friends, she gets herself into all sorts of trouble via bragging, dares, and mean lies. She finally begins to get on track after spending some time with the adults in her life. The plot moves quickly and readers will soon identify the "good guys." Ms. McCracken is a strict, stable, and sensitive teacher who cares about her students. Sam's parents, however, seem superficial and insensitive. A quick, predictable read for fans of this series and of "Babysitter's Club" (Scholastic).
