Grade 1-4Mole and Rat join Toad on an adventure by caravan wagon, Toad's newest fad. They are run off the road by a motorcar and the impulsive Toad, undaunted, unabashedly admits to a new fad, motorcars. An excerpt of chapter two from Grahame's classic, this humorous fantasy with large, bright, lively watercolors is an excel lent read aloud and introduction to the classic. Some influence of Ernest H. Shepard's original illustrations is evi dent. Toad Hall is a stately mansion, and the characters are dressed as prop er Englishmen. This edition is compa rable to yet distinctively different from The Open Road (Scribners, 1980), illus trated by Beverly Gooding. Gooding's characters appear more like their real animal counterparts, and the watercol or and ink illustrations are darker, earthier, and richer. Delacre's illustra tions are lighter, brighter, and airier. Delacre's whimsical Toad is wartless, attractive, and frog-like, just as Rat is pudgier and mouse-like. However, their well-defined comic personalities and emotions show forth in the illustra tions.Jean Gaffney, Dayton and Montgomery County Pub. Lib., Ohio
