Description 143 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm Note Includes index. Subjects Marquetry. Other Author Hobbs, Harry J. Fitchett, Allan E. Other Title Modern marquetry handbook. ISBN 9780684167626 : This book describes all of the methods listed below along with giving useful tips. It also includes a chapter on finishing, and covers the actual cutting, framing, and finishing of a marquetry picture. Marquetry has been around for thousands of years. The earliest known examples are on Egyptian tombs. The term refers to the use of thin pieces of wood called veneer assembled to make a design which can be distinguished by its shape, by the use of grain pattern and wood figure, and by the use of color. Once the design is completed it is then attached to some substrate to stabilize it. The design can be pictorial, geometric, or abstract. Marquetry may be used alone as a picture or it can be applied to a surface for decoration such as a cabinet front. Marquetry usually differs from inlay in the thickness of the wood used and the complexity of the design. Several different methods and tools can be used for marquetry. The simplest and in many ways most satisfying is using a knife and the window method. Fret saws with very fine blades (usually a 5 inch throat with a 12 inch depth using a No. 4/0 blade which has 70 teeth) can also be used and are very helpful with woods that either crumble when knife cut or are too hard to knife cut. Scroll saws fitted with the same blades used with the fret saw are useful for production work or for people who have difficulty holding or using a knife or fret saw. Sawing can be done with a modification of the window method or can use a method called pad or packet cutting. In this method several layers of veneers are used so that multiple pieces can be cut at the same time. This then allows the assembly of several finished pieces at once.
