You don't have to be a New Yorker to share heroine Margaret Binton's outrage at the ruthless tactics of a heartless landlord. A pair of Margaret's old friends, the last tenants in an Upper West Side building slated for gentrification into a condoshopping mall complex, are being harassed to leave their homes of 40 years. Ever the do-gooder, Margaret (The Rag Bag Clan) organizes her motley old troops into a team of street zanies to block another new condo the developer is building. Despite the fun, there is real danger from the unscrupulous landlord. Margaret and her friends are threatened and a murder occurs before Margaret realizes just what she's up against. She is as adept at bullying help from the NYPD as she is at bumming their cigarettes, however. The last scene has a few good twists and, for beleaguered city tenants, a triumphant last laugh on greedy developers. November 19
