Grade 5-10 Readers need not love cats to enjoy these 61 poems about them. Don't be misled by the title, taken from a four-line verse by Spike Milligan. This is not an easy reader. It include challenges such as T. S. Eliot's ``Macavity: The Mystery Cat,'' W. B. Yeats' ``The Cat and the Moon'' and Ted Hughes' ``Pets.'' Lighter pieces include Ogden Nash's ``The Kitten'' and Doug McLeod's ``Kitty.'' More obscure is ``Pangur Ban'' by an unknown 8th-Century monastic student and translated from Gaelic. The variety makes this a lively and interesting single theme collection. Each one of its eight sections focuses on a type of cat (kitten, witch's cat, Tom). Parnall's amusing full-page pencil illustrations introduce each section. Sources are listed in front, with title, author, and first line indexes in back. Libraries owning Beatric Schenk deRegniers' recent This Big Cat and Other Cats I've Known (Crown, 1985), suitable for young readers, will also want this for upper elementary and middle school readers and as a good read-aloud.Judy Greenfield, Rye Free Reading Room, N.Y.
