JUMP OFF THE WEIGHT GAIN/WEIGHT LOSS TREADMILL AND DISCOVER THE REAL REASON MOST DIETS FAIL!
With so many diet programs available, most overweight people try one after another, with varying degrees of temporary success, but never succeed in reaching the permanent weight loss they so desperately want. In the bestselling I Wish I Were Thin, I Wish I Were Fat, Michelle Joy Levine, a psychotherapist for over twenty years, uncovers the real reason why most dieters fail: an unconscious yet powerful fear of being thin or a desire to be fat! As incredible as this may sound, the poignant and revealing case histories presented in this book demonstrate how childhood experiences affect our eating habits, and the helpful exercises included will teach you how to stop sabotaging your goal of permanent weight loss.
Understanding why we overeat is the first step toward a healthy weight and happier life. This highly acclaimed, remarkably insightful book is a must for anyone who is serious about eliminating destructive eating habits from their lives forever.

From the Publisher:

Vanderbilt Press is extremely proud to have published this exceptional book which is receiving the highest acclaim from health professionals and many others as well. "One of a kind," "An exceptional achievement," "The book for all diet conscious people," "One of the best on the subject," "A must for people who are overweight," "A delight to read," "Unique and powerful," are just some of the words of readers of this wonderful book. Although the author is a highly respected certified psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, and teacher, she speaks to the reader in an intimate and personal way conveying both her understanding of the struggles and pain of the overeater and her expertise about how to resolve the problem of overeating.

From the Author:

Growing up in a family in which my mother and her siblings were obese started me wondering why my family could not lose weight and look more like my friends' families. I do not remember feeling ashamed of my mother's appearance, but I know I felt very sorry for her. Her appearance shaped her entire existence. My mother declined social invitations and other opportunities because she was so self-conscious about her body.

As for myself, I have been on and off diets since I was a very young girl. My mother put me on diets then fearing I would grow up to be as fat and unhappy as she.

Presently, I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in practice for over twenty years. I have worked with many overweight people, many of whose cases are elaborated in this book. I decided to write this book to convey to the general public the real reasons we overeat, reasons which have not been written about before except in publications for mental health professionals.

It is remarkable, with all the diet and fitness books that abound, most people who consistently overeat are not aware of the reasons they do. Despite our recognition that being overweight is dangerous to our health, despite our desire to look the way Madison Avenue and Hollywood suggest, millions of people struggle, albeit unsuccessfully, to lose the weight they wish.

Incredulous as it may sound, although most overeaters desperately wish to be thin, on another level, an unconscious level, they wish to be fat or fear being thin. That is the reason most diets fail and why we often regain any weight we lose. Reportedly, out of the 80 million Americans who lose weight each year, 95% of them gain it back within 5 years. Only by understanding why we unconsciously wish to be fat or fear being thin, can we resolve that wish and finally fulfill our conscious wish to be thin.

The real reasons we overeat may be surprising, but will surely strike home, as you identify with the case histories of people whom I have treated. I wrote this book because I wanted to help as many people as I could, who suffer from being overweight, understand why they overeat. For only through that understanding can we be in control over our eating and, therefore, our body appearance and health.

I am confident that this book will definitely help you understand the particular reasons why you overeat. Once you gain the understanding of the specific reasons you overeat, you can follow the 10 minute exercises I have devised to assist you to finally conquer your desire to overeat.

Feel free to write to me about your progress and experience losing weight. My very best wishes, Michelle Joy Levine
