This prize-winning novel takes the resistance movement of World War II as the background to dramatize the triumph of the human spirit over unspeakable ordeal. This is primarily the story of the lawyer Andres and his two brothers who undergo tortures such as mortal man is seldom called upon to endure. The three brothers call up echoes of the Christ figure in the midst of temptation and at Calvary; in this novel the crucifixion is the horizontal spread-eagle of the Japanese torture device. Nowhere in Asian literature is the anguish and the victory of the human spirit more movingly presented than in MORE THAN CONQUERORS. This present edition is a re-working of the original work which had only a limite ciruclation because shortly after its publication the publishing house burned down.
