PreSchool-Grade 3 This fall story will provide fodder for preschool story hours and primary-grade classrooms. Woodland creatures face consternation because Blue Jay's peanuts are being stolen. Wild shrieks propel the sleuthsalong: "THIEF! THIEF! THIEF!" from Blue Jay, "WHO? WHO? WHOooo?"from Owl, "KATY-DID. KATY-DIDN'T" from a grasshopper. Robinand Owl discuss and probe until they see Squirrel, the culprit, gathering peanuts for winter. This action precludes all others: winter is on its way. Attractive full-color watercolor paintings, bled to page edges, tread the line between naturalism and anthropomorphism. Sentences are set apart from the text by painted, twined branch frames. Fur and feather textures, anatomical structure and poses suggesting action demand visual attention. Facial expressions show character. Ultimately, it is this ambiguity between personification and nature study in the text and the illustrations that creates tension in the book. Children will have questions: Do animals really help each other? Is Robin wrong to stop helping Blue Jay? Is preparing for winter more crucial than aiding neighbors? Those who want books with no ambiguity or dilemmas will be happier with standard season selections. Those who enjoy puzzling about unanswered questions will have plenty with which to work.
