Reviews

PreSchool-K These squarish little books whose covers sport pleasant checkerboard borders show a little girl , her parents and baby at their daily doings. Bathwater's Hot opposes, in a somewhat sophisticated but still childlike way , old dog and young kittens, hot bath and cold sea water, hard stones and soft clouds, daytime and nighttime. Noisy notes sounds both loud and soft which children typically notice. The last and most successful title details in counting-book fashion what the sturdy little girl and her comfortable pillar of a grandfather see on a walk in a city park: one black cat, five children in a sandbox, six runners, eight boys playing soccer and so on. Endpapers preview and review the incidents in ten tableaux. The latter two titles are told in verse with occasional lurches in meter. But the cozy watercolor and pen-lined illustrations are delightfully realistic depictions of lumpy, exasperated, far-from-Yuppie parents, messy households and much-loved toys. Adults will feel right at home hereand so will children. Susan Hepler, formerly at Ohio State University, Columbus
