Kindergarten-Grade 2 Too old to live alone, Grandpa Bear moves in with his children and three grandchildren. Grandson Harry Bear is too old to take much interest in Grandpa; Baby Bear is too young. But Grandpa's adoring company is just the right prescription for Samantha's acute case of "middle child-itis." Four brief tales describe Grandpa's and Samantha's adventures: a fantastic moon voyage; Grandpa's reminiscences about his childhood dragon-fighting days; planting a garden; and finally, Samantha's invented bedtime story of a little girl too old for some things, too young for others, but just right for her Grandpa. The tales have echoes of The Three Bears, Flora's Grandpa stories (Atheneum) and James Stevenson's stories about Grandpa, Louie and Mary Ann (Greenwillow). Unfortunately, despite the promising premise, this book isn't as successful as these other titles. The story has a very uneven quality and no strong focus. Degen's cheerful animated watercolors create a much-needed sense of warmth and vitality, but they aren't enough to support the choppy, lackluster text. Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Lib., Wis.
