Reviews

Grade 2-4 Ten short stories, eight new ones and two previously published (from Two and Two Are Four HBJ, 1940; o.p.). It's usual Haywood fare, with old friends from her long list of previously published books, including Betsy, Billy and Eddie among others, romping through a variety of adventures during their summer vacations at the beach, lake, summer camp or in their own neighborhoods. The children find themselves in a variety of predicaments, including being stranded on a rock when the tide comes in and confronting a bear while climbing a mountaintwo of the more exciting adventures in the collection. Animals, including a hermit crab and a porcupine, add a bit of zest to some of the otherwise bland adventures. The writing style and dialogue are also bland, and endings are predictable. A mild sense of humor enlivens the book. The familiar middle-class children that so many young readers have come to know and love since Haywood's first book ( B Is for Betsy HBJ, 1939) was published almost 50 years ago, have changed little, if at all, over the years. These gentle stories, although supposedly contemporary, seem to take place in a more settled time than today. The book is sure to be read with enjoyment by most transitional readers in the early grades, but it may disappoint those who already know that life is not so golden.
