Dave Anderson has been a sportswriter for the New York Times since 1966 and one of its "Sports of the Times" columnists since 1971. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1981 for distinguished commentary. Anderson has written twenty-one books and more than three hundred fifty magazine articles. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and now lives in Tenafly, New Jersey, with his wife, Maureen. They have four grown children: Stephen, Mark, Mary Jo, and Jean Marie. From School Library Journal:
Grade 5 Up Even those who don't like football will enjoy Anderson's entertaining and informative look at the sport. Like its companion book, Ritter's The Story of Baseball (Morrow, 1983), this one begins with a history of the game, era by era, highlighting the important events and the people that shaped the game. The second half is devoted to the special skills needed for the various phases of the gamerunning, passing, kicking, receiving, blocking, tackling and coaching. No dry "how-to's" here, however; rather an expression of the intangibles that go into excellence in each area of effort. Anderson's book is full of wonderful anecdotes that are carefully chosen to illustrate his points. Names and statistics are used in a similar fashion . The many black-and-white photographs are equally well chosen and have been carefully placed to highlight the text. The clean, uncluttered layout is visually inviting. Text, illustrations and format all work together, and the result is a touchdown. Other surveys of the game, such as Liss' They Changed the Game (Lippincott, 1975; o.p.) or Lorimer and Devaney's The Football Book (Random, 1977) may contain more straight information, butdatedness asidethey are no substitute for this eminently readable title.
