Reviews

The three categories of medical self-care are preventive, therapeutic, and convalescent. The authors encourage self-diagnosis and treatment for minor disorders but advocate calling in a doctor if these disorders do not respond to their array of conventional home remedies. Each chapter covers an ailment and includes sources of further information or equipment. Without some knowledge of anatomy, the reader might find the book lacks enough illustrations. One looks askance at some treatments, but the book is not as polemical as Preventions's New Encyclopedia of Common Diseases (Rodale, 1984). It generally sticks to conventional protocol and common sense. Good index.Robert Jordan, Iowa Testing Programs Lib., Univ. of Iowa, Iowa City
