Text: English, French (translation)From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2 Solotareff's story recounts the always-welcome defeat of a large, not-very-bright creature by a small-but-clever creature. Owing to his quick grasp of a momentary advantage over the ogre, and his calculated follow-up, the frog is able to compel the ogre (who eats small animals) to leave the forest forever. Solotareff's orange-and green pictures engagingly blend elements of the cartoon with sophisticated changes of perspective (counterpointing the plot, which hinges on an accident of perspective). The ogre is just the right combination of repulsive and comic; the frog wears a crown (although his kingship plays no part in the tale). The language is mostly simple, but never condescending. The typeface is clear and large. A simple little story, unencumbered by any obvious moral, that is likely to give small readers considerable satisfaction.
