Infatuated with her glamorous, fashionable teacher, Miss Lynn Ryan, Carrie, a careless daydreamer, embarks on a campaign to impress Miss Ryan, with the help of a special social studies project

Grade 4-6 Carrie Macphail has a fifth-grade crush on her teacher, Miss Ryan, who ignores Carrie and treats her exactly as she does Luke Olson, the class nerd. Throughout this novel, Carrie makes every effort to win over the young teacher, but always fails. Through several telling incidentsMiss Ryan dismisses Luke's science project by telling him that he is only a fifth grader, not an entomologist; she makes fun of Carrie's poster to another teacher; and she is not pleased with Carrie's innovative social studies reportCarrie realizes what Miss Ryan is really like and develops a stronger sense of self. Carrie doesn't knuckle under because of her teacher's disapproval, for she is sure within herself that she has succeeded. Carrie has grown enough to stand up in class to defend her friend Luke and demand that Luke's exhibit be in the science fair, even though this exposes Carrie to the ridicule of her classmates. Her friends stand by her, though, and this is another plus for the novel. Miss Ryan is the antitheses of a good teacher, and one that readers are going to love to hateespecially if they've already met her. They will also cheer Carrie, a feisty new heroine.
