PreS-Gr 2 Soft sepia ink lines with light watercolor washes delineate a story of kindness shared again by the tiny, delicate mouse called Celestine and the lumbering bear, Ernest. As in others in the series, the contrast of these two inevitably unique animals makes their caring for each other even more attractive. This time Ernest is lugubrious in his illness, and Celestine is determined to nurse him to the fullest. The true feelings of being sick and the labors of being a care-taker are explored. In an effort to prepare a comforting supper, the kitchen is overflowing. In one delightful double-page spread, a series of irregularly placed boxes surrounds the now-laughing Ernest as persistent Celestine cheers him by dancing, drawing, and performing creative dramatics. As in Vincent's other books, there is nothing saccharine about her hopeful connections between friends. The gentleness in line and word complement each other beautifully, and the large format gives a sense of the abundance of infinite caring, leaving children with a strong sense of warmth and security; just the cure for feeling better.
