From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- The familiar theme of teasing is given a unique framework in this pleasant offering. When Ada takes up the violin, she experiences the usual trials and tribulations of the budding musician: her father wears ear muffs when she practices at home, her hand shakes and she kicks over the music stand during school rehearsal. But Ada perseveres, grows in self-confidence, and learns to enjoy herself. The real trouble starts when a group of teens begin to call her "Ada Potato" and snatch away her violin case. Ada rejects her instrument until her mother intercedes. Bolstered by maternal advice, Ada devises a creative and peaceful way to triumph over her adversaries. The funky, folk-art inspired watercolor and colored pencil illustrations are brightly colored and lively. The detailed patterns on everyday objects will cause young listeners to take a second look. While the concern over a big bully is right on target, and the primary grade audience will find satisfaction in Ada's victory, most will not face her dilemma of choosing a musical instrument for a few years. Simply written and lightly humorous, this is a good choice for libraries wanting more picture books with child appeal. --Julie Corsaro, University of Chicago Laboratory Schools

From Publishers Weekly:

So that she may play in the school's "bandestra"--a band that includes string instruments--Ada takes up the cello. Her father dons earmuffs and her sister teases her about her double chin, but Ada practices hard and learns how to play in time with the other members of the bandestra. Ada's problem comes when some older kids make fun of her cello and call her Ada Potato. It's enough to make Ada put aside her musical aspirations forever. But after some encouraging words from her mother, Ada gets the big kids on her side, and, Pied Piper-style, gets them to follow her to school. Caseley's solutions may strike readers as somewhat unrealistic; these big kids, even in the chipper, carefully detailed paintings, don't look as if they'd go along with Ada's actions. For those willing to suspend belief, however, the story is strongest when it concentrates on Ada's selection of an instrument and on the joys of making music. Ages 3-up.
