Two young cats, unappreciated Violet and her bragging friend Grim, use a magic flying cape to stop a gang of bank robbers

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-4-- This easy-to-read adventure is a parody of small-town kids foiling cigar-chomping bank robbers, with all the old stereotypes played by cats. Tomboy Violet has a hideout in the town dump. There she finds a purple cape that, with the words, ``I am Violet,'' enables her to fly. She meets up with a hungry companion, Grim, and a gang planning to rob the local bank. The pair report the crime about to happen and, when the sheriff won't believe them, block the gang's escape with a chain of shopping carts, a load of coffins, and a cement mixer. Despite particularized details, the breakneck-paced story is uninspired, with the cape magic too casual and undeveloped. The black-and-white cartoon drawings washed in shades of gray have the look of Saturday morning TV fare. While new readers may not see this as tired plot, it does not measure up to such chapter books as Yep's Curse of the Squirrel (Random, 1987 ), Conford's ``Jenny Archer'' books (Little), Adler's ``Cam Jansen,'' or Kline's ``Horrible Harry'' titles (both Viking). --Ruth M. From Kirkus Reviews:

A cartoon-style adventure with cats for people. Feeling baleful about her family's preference for her model older sister, Violet goes off to play at the dump, where she finds a cape that transports her, like Superman, when she says the magic words: ``I am Violet!'' Next, she happens on a pleasant character called Grim who says he's a robber. He does have a packful of cash, but the rest of his story is the product of his colorful imagination. Real robbers turn up; with Grim's help, Violet thwarts their next heist with bravado and ingenuity. A lively romp, well-paced and funny. Illustrations not seen.
