9780688095390: When the Big Dog Barks

Fear of thunder, strangers, and big barking dogs is not so bad when mother and father are nearby. A tender and comforting picture book that the youngest of listeners will take to their hearts.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1. This book doesn't really tell a story?the words and pictures merely chronicle an appealing little girl's many fears (of dogs, the dark, strangers, thunder, etc.) and the way her parents protect and reassure her, mostly through physical contact. There is little or no effort made to help her overcome her fears, as in Patricia Polacco's Thunder Cake (Philomel, 1990) or Rebecca Jones's The Biggest, Meanest, Ugliest Dog in the Whole Wide World (Macmillan, 1982; o.p.), which makes for a very static reading or listening experience. The narrative ends simply, "'We'll keep you safe' my mama says. And I know they do." This might possibly be useful in helping preschoolers talk about their fears although the child looks more like a five or six year old. The colored-pencil illustrations done predominantly in shades of orange and purple are interestingly juxtaposed against a mostly white background and beautifully convey every nuance of expression on the little girl's face. They're much more engaging than the text.?Sue Norris, Rye Free Reading Room, NY

From Booklist:

Ages 2^-5. Secure in her parents' love, a small child finds that she can be brave. Because Papa is there to catch her, she can climb too high on the monkey bars. With him sitting close by, she can watch the witch in The Wizard of Oz. The clear, lovely, light-filled pictures show the tension and closeness when she's scared, the smiling relaxation when she's safe. Papa holds her when thunder comes, and they look out at the stormy night together. Not all the situations are dramatic; in fact, it is in the very ordinariness of the experiences that kids will recognize themselves. A smiling, overbearing stranger overwhelms her, and she needs to hide behind Mama. When the baby-sitter comes, and Mama goes out, "Mama always comes back." More telling than protestations of love, the action is elemental: "When I call, they come." Hazel Rochman
