From Publishers Weekly:

After spending time in a shelter for pregnant teens, having a baby and giving her up for adoption, 16-year-old Andrea Tagg returns to her home, on a remote island off New York's Long Island, a different person. She finds it difficult to settle into her old way of life with her parents and friends, who act as if nothing has happened. Andrea carries her grief privately until she strikes up an unlikely friendship with a visitor, a young soldier gone AWOL. Andrea has always despised people like Swede Stuhr, the son of wealthy tourists, yet in spite of herself she becomes intimately involved with this lonely stranger. Without passing judgment on Andrea's decisions, this thoughtful story focuses on the changes she confronts during the aftermath of her ordeal. Showing rather than telling her characters' emotions, Farish ( Why I'm Already Blue ) relays the native islanders' close ties to their land, their resentment of intruders and their pragmatic approach to life. Although some may feel that this subtle novel is too leisurely paced, those who seek a quiet, contemplative read will find the gradual, realistic unraveling of events highly effective. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 8-12-- A difficult contemporary issue--teen pregnancy--is treated with a melancholy blend of coming-of-age and bittersweet romance. Andrea, 16, has just had a baby and has given her up for adoption. Her body feels as changed as her life, as her family, friends, and community (being sold off lot by lot) no longer conform to her pre-baby vision. Then she meets Swede, a soldier gone AWOL; he is invited to a family dinner where Andrea's pet rooster is the main dish. This incident begins a bonding process between Andrea, who is angry and defiant, and Swede, slightly eccentric and always understanding. The writing is flawless, but the mood is sustained almost to the point of sullenness. Little is said about sex, Andrea's pregnancy, or her baby's birth, but the events permeate the text. There is no lightness in Andrea or Swede's lives as they wander to a predictable conclusion, yet the portrayal of Andrea as a grieving, tough, and angry teen mother rings true, along with her need to see and touch an actual baby. A book that will be appreciated by teens in similar circumstances. --Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, RI
