An illustrated edition of the poem describing Barbara Fritchie's dramatic stand with the Union flag against the rebel troops invading her town

Grade 1-6-- Using the same format that she employed to interpret Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride (Greenwillow, 1985), Parker presents Whittier's well-known Civil War poem. A stage-setting preface, a map, the poem itself, and some concluding notes to explain references in the text are combined with the illustrator's instantly recognizable artwork. Brief biographical sketches of the poet and of Stonewall Jackson are included as well. The poem, with the accompanying historical notes, provides good supplementary material for social-studies units. In her preface, Parker mentions the controversy over whether or not the memorialized incident ever occurred. Narrative poems like this one are good choices for illustration, and Parker's deceptively simple style works successfully with Whittier's verse. A well-crafted volume for libraries with a demand for illustrated poems or material for whole-language classrooms. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA
