Vavra spent five weeks tenting in Kenya, with the help of several Maasai tribesmen and the acquaintance of many others. This folio is both a photographic and written document of that experience. The full-page color photographs are arresting, with close-ups of tribespeople and animals. Many silhouettes are used, which are superb. The black background on the pages of photographs gives the book a luscious, dark, and mysterious air. The text, about one-third of the book, is personal and anecdotal, but Vavra recommends other books to learn about Maasai culture in detail. The style is poetic and enjoyable, and the adventures interesting and exciting. Recommended for travel, photography, and anthropology collections.
