From Publishers Weekly:

The likable, level-headed Samantha Tate returns in this sequel to Rats, Spiders and Love. Portrayed with warmth and good spirits, the Tates move to the Midwest, where Samantha must cope with her mother's remarriage and a new school. There it appears her only real friend is her eccentric and unpopular next-door neighbor. As tensions mount at home between Samantha's sister and stepfather, the girl proposes a family project to pull everyone together. The subsequent adoption of two horses provides an amusing solution and offers the Tates plenty of distractions. With a light touch, Pryor skillfully examines the kinds of recognizable issues that come with changing families and new homes. Her story's lively pace and believable dialogue effectively delineate the give and take of a family in flux. While the novel's themes are not unique, readers will once again be quietly amused by this engaging family. Ages 9-up.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5-- The Tate family, first introduced in Rats, Spiders, and Love (Morrow, 1986), has a lot of adjusting to do because of their mother's new marriage and their relocation from Oregon to Ohio. Sisters Samantha and Julie are coping differently, and Julie's constant bickering with her stepfather contibutes to Sam's uneasy feelings about the situation, despite her much more positive and hopeful attitude. A family project is proposed--getting two horses for the girls. Things get a bit out of hand when the animals are purchased at the onset of winter before the construction of the barn is complete. A makeshift stable in the garage adds chaos and hilarity, encouraging the new family to develop a fresh bond. A light look at the perils and pleasures of moving, making new friends, and living with stepparents.
