The third outing for Cleveland shamus Gil Disbro finds him flying to Nevada in search of millionaire Boyd Lassiter's estranged wife, Renee, now mysteriously missing from a dude ranch. Then, peculiarly, she returns to Ohio and is forcibly escorted to a private club--where a pimp works her over before Disbro steps in and rescues her. By the time he gets her home, Lassiter has been murdered; his bodyguard/chauffeur is found dead; and his houseboy dies soon thereafter. With girlfriend Helen in tow, Disbro again flies to Nevada to check out Renee's recent past and discovers a gigolo cowpuncher, a cache of recreational drugs that may have been sent to Renee by Lassiter, and the coyote-chewed body of Renee's friend Shana out in the desert. Did Lassiter love or hate Renee? Did Shana look enough like Renee to use her I.D. and charge cards? Are cops in two states mad at Disbro for not filling them in as he unravels pieces of the puzzle? A few punch-'em-ups later, the greedy ones cave in--but not before Helen takes a beating at the gaming tables and Disbro gathers the suspects together to Explain All. Glib, without the grittiness of The Mercy Trap but, unfortunately, with an all-too-transparent is-she-isn't-she switch and thugs galore. A so-so effort. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. In this updated, watered-down version of the classic hard-boiled detective novel, ex-police officer Martin ( The Flip Side of Life ) offers the third adventure of Cleveland PI Gil Disbro. Wealthy Cleveland resident Boyd Lassiter hires Disbro to find his wife Renee, who is missing from the Nevada dude ranch where she was establishing residency prior to filing for divorce. After he learns that Renee is flying back to Cleveland, Disbro meets her plane and observes her leaving unwillingly with some mobsters he recognizes. He follows their car, frees her and takes her to the Lassiter home, where they discover that Boyd has been killed and his chauffeur is missing. Feeling honor-bound to stick with the case, Disbro determines to track down Boyd's killers and find out what kind of trouble Renee is in. Gil's wisecracks, his English professor girlfriend (who is 10 years older than he) and his views on her specialty, Thomas Hardy's novels, add trendy touches to a tired formula.
