A rabbit fleeing from three polar bears is helped by a series of animals

Kindergarten-Grade 1-- Rabbit's peaceful fishing suddenly turns into a wild chase when three hungry-looking polar bears spring up. In Newton's big watercolors, the bears look as if they're chopped and sculpted from ice; small wedge-shaped brushstrokes give their fur a jagged appearance that reinforces the lean, barracudalike lines of their heads and bodies. The pale rabbit, frantic in every stylized curve and point, speeds through a brilliantly colored Arctic land and seascape that feature curlicue waves, gemlike wildflowers, and a succession of animals in stained-glass hues. Eventually the bears catch up and surround Rabbit menacingly--it looks like curtains until one growls ``Tag! You're it!'' and all collapse in laughter. The brief, large-type text has a conversational tone at odds with the extravagance of the illustrations, but the final explosive release of tension is nicely done. --John Peters, New York Public Library
