A child celebrates a birthday with a party, long-distance telephone call, special card, cake, and gifts

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Like Goennel's other books, her trademark blank-faced characters and bold, colorful illustrations (done here in acrylic on canvas, a technique that emphasizes texture as well as hue) illuminate and extend the simple story--in this case, a young girl's birthday celebration. The brief text succeeds in sounding authentically childlike without being either awkward or simplistic. The environment is clearly white and middle-class, with all of the attendant privileges (activities at her party include a treasure hunt, a magician, party games, and a pony ride, along with a cake with 17 candles!, ice cream, and gifts). Unfortunately, while Goennel's stylized illustrations are generally effective in emphasizing the universality of her chosen themes, here, one closeup of the girl's featurless face is oddly disturbing. Despite this criticism, the book is unquestionably attractive and likely to be a popular story-hour choice. --Lisa Dennis, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
