Davy Crockett could run faster, jump higher, and dive deeper than any man in Tennessee. This all-American folktale is "just right for introducing primary-grade readers to an American legend."--The Reading Teacher. Full-color illustrations.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 1-3-- Dewey briefly retells, in rollicking prose, several of Davy Crockett's outlandish exploits that were common currency even during his lifetime: climbing out of a hollow tree by biting a bear on the tail, riding a bolt of lightning, walking up Niagara Falls on an alligator. His (folkloric) wife, Sally Ann Thunder Ann, makes an appearance here, rescuing Davy from eagles picking his hair out. Dewey's bright watercolor cartoons are complete with snakes in rainbow colors and a live raccoon who plays the role of Davy's hat. Pictures on each page are accompanied by five or ten lines of text framed neatly with square borders. What a fitting figure to be remembered as a folk hero, and what a merry picture-book tribute to him. Expect neither history nor biography--just enjoy a witty invitation to tall-tale fun. --Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, Allen, TX

From Publishers Weekly:

In Dewey's version of the famous mountain man, Davy Crockett is a teller of tall tales who has constant brushes with danger. With the "surest rifle and the ugliest dog anywhere," Davy takes on a bear's less-than-affectionate embraces, falls into a hollow tree filled with bees and gets in a too-tight scrape with a snake. He is a man of wild accomplishments and wilder stories about those accomplishments. The illustrations are crisp and colorful and the brief text moves along swiftly. The tales include his courtship of Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind and his campaign for Congress, in which he promises to outtalk any congressman without taking a breath. Ages 6-up.
