Mary D. Lankford is the former director of library services for the Texas Education Agency and has received many awards, among them the Texas Library Association Distinguished Service Award. The author of informational books for children, including Christmas USA, Christmas Around the World, and Jacks Around the World, she travels across the country conducting workshops on libraries and children's literature. She lives in Austin, Texas. From Booklist:
Similar in concept and format to Lankford and Dugan's Christmas around the World (1995), this colorful book takes readers on a region-by-region tour of the U.S. as well as discusses Christmas in the White House and offers a series of craft instructions and holiday recipes. The book concludes with a time line of popular toys and a bibliography. Each region of the country is introduced with a page of informative text facing a full-page illustration. The page on the plains states, for example, describes the Christmas tree tradition, glass ornaments, and silver-foil icicles that German immigrants brought to the region. Warm and cheery, the illustrations and decorative borders enhance the book's appeal. A pleasant, useful addition to Christmas collections Carolyn Phelan
