Grade 4-6 The next best thing to watching the New York City Ballet perform The Nutcracker is to read this book and linger over the vivid color photographs of the Balanchine ballet. Switzer sets the stage with background material about the Hoffmann story, its first transformation into a ballet by Ivanov in 1892 and its various incarnations, including George Balanchine's 1954 staging. She also discusses the productions of the Pacific Northwest Ballet designed by Sendak and Barishnikov's Nutcracker for the American Ballet Theater. The heart of this book is the story of the ballet clearly told with enough detail to interpret the well-placed photographs and set the scenes without overwhelming readers. The only dialogue in the text is a translation of the mime gestures used by the Nutcracker Prince to tell the Sugar Plum Fairy how Marie's heroic action saved his life and allowed him to kill the King of the Mice and the Sugar Plum Fairy's response. When the curtain falls, Switzer takes readers backstage to meet the cast and learn about the characters "as the Dancers see them." A short bibliography that includes titles for adults as well as younger readers closes the book and invites us to experience "The Nutcracker" again and again.
