PreSchool-Grade 3 "The end has come" is the foreboding and oft repeated lamentation of the Lobster Moth Fairy, whose task is to protect the Lobster Moth population from extinction. Their rapidly shrinking numbers are in imminent danger from two fronts: Willis Matlock, a bespectacled entomologist, and his cat Puffin, who dines upon them. All of the characters are flat and unappealing, and the fairy is little more than a vehicle for justice. The villainous duo are transformed into the very creatures that they so thoughtlessly prey upon. This twist leads to multiple difficulties with neighbors, the police and army officials who suspect they are part of a Russian spy network. Ultimately, the pair is forced to leave their quiet lives behind and join in the migration of the Lobster Moths. Mercifully, for the eighth and final time, "the end has come." The cartoonish illustrations are airy and amusing, but they fail to save a text that is marred by the overuse of repetition, adult humor and a liberal peppering of inappropriate vocabulary. As an appeal for greater respect for nature and the environment, this book takes a wobbly stand, but as a children's picture book, its entertainment value is highly questionable.
