Grade 1-3 A wordy, moralistic tale that incorporates lessons on segregation, peace and war and friendship between those who are different. Tarquin, hatched during a time when dragons are in low esteem, is sent to work in a nearby town; with the adult dragons, he does much heavy labor for people, but he is denied entrance to stores and not allowed to ride the bus. He meets another orphan, a little girl who also is taunted because she is different. Eventually, all dragons are banished from the village, and war almost breaks outuntil the little girl and Tarquin reunite the opposing groups. But the people still think the dragons are lazy and slow, and rather than try to keep the two factions at peace, Ellie and Tarquin take off into the sky, with the moon and stars smiling their approval. This is a confusing story, with an ending that will leave most children totally perplexed. The dialogue does not suit the lofty themes, with lines like, "Oh heavens, oh gosh, oh my!" The softly colored, delicate illustrations are overpowered by the lengthy text, and rather than extend it, they merely decorate, often serving as borders to the text.
