Birch's father, a retired engineer, operated a small steam railroad with his friend, but their successful tourist attraction is soon threatened by a proposed toxic waste dump

Grade 7 Up Written in a brisk "gee whiz" style that could give "breezy" an undesirable reputation, Thunder Down the Track is a charmless blend of forced humor, steam railroading slang, shallow characterization, unconvincing coincidences, and a thin plot involving the unwanted dumping of nerve gas "by an unscrupulous California company" and a cross-country locomotive chase. Birch Delger, a freckle-faced boy of ten when first encountered, loves steam railroading, as does his father, Pop Delger, a steam engineer. Pop is given early retirement when diesels replace steam engines. When the government decides to have the Argonaut Ordinance Company bury deadly nerve gas nearby, Pop, friend Max, and Birch go into action following some mysterious sabotage. With the help of old "steam boggers" across the country, the three thwart the "baddies" just in time for a happy ending. Interspersed throughout are some good descriptions of the flora and fauna of Michigan's Upper Peninsula along with some information on how to run a railroad; however, these are not enough to save the book. David A. Lindsey, Lakewood Junior/Senior High School Library, Wash.
