Grade 5-7-- David, an 11-year-old runaway from a foster family that didn't want him, seeks temporary shelter in an old Seattle hotel. There, he meets a motley group of night workers who, because of their own hard-luck experiences, secretly set him up in a vacant room and feed and clothe him. Paul, an alcoholic bellboy and a loner, who long ago had abandoned his wife and daughters, convinces the boy not to keep running. Melissa, a pretty 22-year-old barmaid, lets David stay with her temporarily after the hotel manager discovers David's presence and fires Paul. Initially, David resists Paul's and Melissa's urgings that he talk to a social worker friend, but after an abortive runaway attempt, the boy agrees to the meeting. To David's surprise, Paul offers to have David stay with him until an appropriate foster family is found. Except for David, the characters rarely transcend their predictable stereotype. While David is portrayed as a likable, honest, and intelligent orphan (his family was killed in an auto accident which he alone survived), young readers might question how any 11 year old in David's position could so easily counsel his confused new adult friends about their problems. David is nonetheless an appealing mixture of a boy who has been hurt often and one who has not lost hope, and readers David's age will relate to his personality and problems. --Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego
