A long car trip through the West provides the boastful cat Wiggie with many opportunities to save the human and animal members of his family, who sometimes do not realize how brave, selfless, and brilliant he is.

Elisabet McHugh lives in the Pacific Northwest.
Grade 4-6-- The flabby feline who first appeared in Beethoven's Cat (Atheneum, 1988) once again demonstrates a gift for creating instant chaos and his vast and unbruisable ego as he accompanies the Carter family on a cross-country trip. Between Virginia and Idaho, where Mr. Carter has finally landed a job, Wiggie manages to lock himself in a closet, fall into a pool, cause a riot in a restaurant, and then redeem himself by driving a burglar away from the car, all the while spouting misinformation, stupid opinions, and self-congratulatory remarks to a gaggle of fellow pets and consuming every edible tidbit in sight. Many readers may find Wiggie's unrelieved arrogance tedious, especially since the other characters display only traces of personality. Steer fans of Howe's "Bunnicula" stories (Atheneum) to Robert Lawson (Little) or McInerney's "Judge Benjamin" series (Holiday) first. --John Peters, New York Public Library
