Mary Elise Monsell authored many children’s books, which were issued in several languages and reprints. Her Mr. Pin mystery series, a bestseller in school book clubs and an IRA/CBC Children’s Choice, was developed into a musical in Chicago. Her UNDERWEAR book has become a classic. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern and a master’s degree in teaching.
Grade 2-4-- In the title story of this third book in the series, Mr. Pin, a Chicago-based rock hopper penguin detective, discovers who is smashing the gargoyles around the city, but readers never learn who the look-alike villainous penguin is or the purpose of a captured code book. The second story, "The Spitter Pitchers," is a more straightforward piece of suspense. Sam Spitter, a relief pitcher in a slump, secretly plans to have his talented twin substitute and save his team's season standing. Detective Pin foils the deception and inspires Sam to pitch well. Although the two previous books about Mr. Pin have special appeal for reluctant and newly independent readers, the uneven quality of this one may leave them confused and wondering. Instead, offer young sleuths the "Encyclopedia Brown" series (Morrow) by Donald Sobol or David Adler's "Cam Jansen" books (Viking). --Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID
