From School Library Journal:

ea. vol: illus. by Kady MacDonald Denton. unpaged. McElderry Bks: Macmillan. 1987. PSm $6.95. PreSchool-Grade 1 A redhead named Ned leads his parents on a merry chase in two small, cheerful titles. In . . . Shopping, Ned and his dad try to buy a new sweater. Ned and his dog Fred would rather hop than shop, and Dad is in for a wild afternoon. There's more text, and more careening action in this romp with Ned; kids will laugh out loud at Fred running away with one arm of the sweater while Ned hangs on for dear life to the other end. The same style animates Time for Bed, in which Ned repeatedly eludes his mother's grasp as she tries to corral him for bath and bed. Ned cries ``No! No! No!'' as he gleefully runs away, crawling under the doghouse and diving into the laundry basket, but his closing line is a happy ``Good night, Mom.'' Only 23 different large print words tell the story, and only a few of those appear on each page. Ned's good-natured bolt for freedom is told largely through the bright pencil and watercolor illustrations, which show breezily simple figures full of personality and action. Their style is charmingly out of the ordinary, combining a streamlined economy of line with abstract washes that still manage to convey a wealth of personality. The small, squarish format of these titles marks them for the younger set, although the brief rhymed texts and humor make them ideal for just-beginning readers.

From Publishers Weekly:

Parents of toddlers who have outgrown their board books may pounce on this sunny pair of titles. Hope's minimalist dialogue is reminiscent of Dick and Jane but much livelier: "I don't like shopping. I like hopping. Come on, Fred. Hop, hop, hop!" "Ned! Stop!" (This last from a disgruntled father, trying to find a sweater for his boisterous lad.) Ned neatly delays going to bed in one book; in the other he resists a red sweater to the very last, settling on blue for himself and his dog, Fred. Denton's cheeky watercolors give these books a pell-mell pace and turn Ned's mayhem into good-natured mischief.
