From School Library Journal:

Grade 6-9-- Tapp tackles a veritable cauldron of woes. Thirteen - year - old heroine Robin is introduced as she waits out the nearly successful suicide attempt of her beautiful and talented but schizophrenic college-student sister, Jen. Then--it's flashback time. In a draggy narrative choked with a sense of impending doom, the author "telegraphs" her plot punches. Thus, the Big Secret--the cause of Jen's problems is childhood sexual abuse--isn't a secret for much of the story. Far too many other themes are offered--rebellion against Catholicism, the symbolism of the hula hoop, the stigma of mental illness, to name a few, to further confuse; these themes are inadequately developed. An effort to portray complexity deteriorates into a mishmash. The story is so unfocused that readers may well be startled by an epilogue which indicates that this is intended as bibliotherapy and includes a National Child Abuse Hotline number as a parting admonition. Earnest, but off the mark in terms of literary style and social objective. --Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.

From Publishers Weekly:

Set in the '60s, this touching novel explores 13-year-old Robin's feelings about her older sister Jen. Jen is talented, fun; she is also emotionally disturbed. The story takes place in flashbacks at Christmas time; Jen has come home from college and shot herself. At home alone waiting for news from the hospital, Robin reaches back into her memory to try to understand Jen's illness. Robin is at the center of the novel--her preoccupation with religious miracles and the scrapes she gets into provide a poignant counterpoint to Jen's troubles. Good writing and characterization prevent the story from drifting into melodrama and give the telling an emotional truthfulness, as if it is being passed between friends. Ages 10-14.
