A collection of poems about owls by many different authors.

Grade 5 Up-- An almost infinite variety of owls and the many moods, images , and ideas they stir in humans. Along with familiar poems from nursery rhymes and limericks are modern works by favorite poets such as Jack Prelutsky, David McCord, Eve Merriam , and Livingston herself. Also included are selections from Shakespeare, Tennyson , and Wordsworth . It is especially satisfying to find poems representative of more than half a dozen Native American peoples, attesting to the importance of the owl in these cultures. The humorous poems will probably be the most appealing to children. Who can resist X. J. Kennedy's "Owl" which ends, "And just because he preens like men/ Who utter grave advice,/ We think him full of wisdom when/ He's only full of mice"? Others capture the mystery of this bird who, in the words of Deborah Chandra, manages "To see the things I cannot see,/ And be a thing I cannot be." The jacket illustrations, front and rear, and the seven additional woodcuts within by Frasconi merely hint at the brooding power of these creatures and are clearly not the best work of this distinguished illustrator. --Kay E.
