Gr. 3-5. In 40 small poems, Livingston leaps from the mundane to the imaginary, making us see street and field, airplane and bird, in a new way. As always, she makes strong use of sound to reinforce sense, whether it's the feeling of grief for a dead pet ("I sing myself a humming song / when I wake up, / and all day long") or the buzzing of a housefly in autumn. Some poems are literally about airplanes, but most of the flights are journeys through memory and play. The nature poems, such as "Highway Haiku," are precise and physical, with sudden surprising imagery. There's a lovely, simple piece about meeting a good friend in a busy place and standing "catty-corner" until the light changes so the two can walk together, swinging arms, on the same side of the street. The cover, with a large airplane in the foreground and skyscrapers behind, will lure kids to poetry that's about the world around them. Hazel RochmanFrom School Library Journal:
Grade 5-7-Forty short poems, three of which have appeared previously. Livingston describes sights and insights in simple, direct language, sometimes with an adult's voice and sometimes with a child's, making private observations or addressing a companion. Though the theme of flight recurs, both literally and figuratively, the selections include some post-Christmas thoughts, several "Highway Haiku," and tributes to Margot Tomes and Jacques D'Amboise. Young readers will find Livingston's writing both easy to follow and imagination-stretching.
