Grade 4-6-- The sudden popularity of Lance Knight, the new fifth-grade boy, surprises Nutty Nutsell, and he begins to feel threatened, especially when he overhears the girls comparing Lance to him--with discouraging results. His friend William comes up with a scheme to bolster Nutty's image; Nutty will become a movie star. William manages to secure a small part for Nutty in a TV movie, and the two boys leave their small town in Missouri for Hollywood. However, the movie is embarassingly stupid, and Nutty's part shrinks to one line. When the movie is shown in Nutty's hometown, he becomes a laughingstock. In a Hollywood ending, William is able to turn everything around so that Nutty ends up a hero. The story is humorous and entertaining, even though it is unbelievable. How William is able to pull off his incredible feats is left unexplained, and readers must take on faith his ability to secure movie roles, manipulate directors, etc. The characters display authentic fifth-grade traits, such as boy/girl shyness and fragile self-esteem, but they are one-dimensional and predictable. The events and dialogue fall in between Spinelli's frankly realistic Space Station Seventh Grade (Little, 1982), and Robert Newton Peck's rather old fashioned Soup and Me (Knopf, 1975). The plot : of this latest addition to the series is silly, but that's a common feature of popular books for this age. --Carrol McCarthy, Tower Hill School, Wilmington, DE
