Kindergarten-Grade 2?With tongue in cheek, Roth calls this book "a very spooky mystery." It's really a playful piece of fluff. Three children?and a shaggy gray dog?hear noises in the night and get out of bed to investigate. Perceptive readers may put together the clues (a spilled baby bottle, an empty crib) before the protagonists do. In any case, the fact that a baby is responsible for the noises is certainly clever, if somewhat anticlimactic. While the brief text and slight story line are fairly engaging, the book's chief appeal lies in is its thoroughly contemporary illustrations. Roth's cut-paper and fabric pictures are done with a sure sense of design, and are also quite evocative, creating an off-balance mood that is not sustained by the writing. The text is sparse--only 45 words--but Roth packs it with visual appeal by using a variety of lettering styles and colors to achieve special effects. Equally appealing are the unusual collage illustrations. Made with cut paper and fabric, they brim with color, pattern, and texture. Preschoolers will enjoy the rhyme, which is filled with onomatopoeia, and can use the visual clues to identify the culprit. School-age youngsters, however, may find the book too lightweight.
