Grade 1-3?Children who are just learning to play chess might enjoy this book, but those who know nothing about the game are likely to be totally lost. Couched in the context of a dream adventure, the young hero of the tale finds himself on a huge chessboard. There he meets two sets of kings and queens and asks them for a game. They challenge him to find the gamemaster while warning him to beware the pawns, rooks, knights, and bishops. Subsequent pages lead him to encounters with each of the above-mentioned players, replete with cryptic poems, amulets, and warnings along the way. Beautifully crafted cut-paper illustrations and florid language create the impression of a bold adventure, but sadly, despite all the trappings, nothing much really transpires. While readers do learn the names of the chess pieces, and to some extent what they look like, they do not discover the moves they are permitted to make in the context of a game. A book that is inviting and appealing on the surface but is empty at its core.?Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City
