PreSchool-Grade 2-Charlie Rooster, Fat Percy, and Johnny Mouse return in this sequel to Friends (McElderry, 1982). Tired of the monotonous routine on the farm, they "...set out in search of adventure in the great, wide world." They rescue a goose princess and her sisters from a fox; encounter a band of pirates and a trained shark in the Red Sea; and meet up with a cannibal (a chef wielding a carving knife). By the end of the day, hungry and tired, they ride home on an elephant's back and then regale all the stay-at-homes with tales of their adventures. Heine uses a conversational storyteller's voice and keeps the plot moving at a brisk pace. Kids will love the outrageous details, and parents will appreciate some of the sly bits he throws in. His artwork has gotten a bit sketchier and more impressionistic over the years. And his watercolors are great: colorful, lively, and intrinsically funny. Like James Stevenson, he does a lot with a little: complex bits of character and emotion are conveyed with just a few brushstrokes. A worthy successor to the first book and a "must-have" for most libraries.?Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
