From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Lucky Morgenstern is so lucky that all the kids want to sit next to him, hoping some of his good luck will rub off, and he attributes his good fortune to the fact that his name is Lucky. One day, he receives a letter addressed to Herbert Morgenstern, which, he learns, is the name on his birth certificate, and "...in the tiniest of seconds, Lucky wasn't." Life is suddenly horrible, and Herbert sends even his beloved grandfather away. Then the elderly man is sent to the hospital, and Herbert is forced to look beyond himself. This lively story of considering whether glasses are half full or half empty is loaded with energetic, full-color cartoon illustrations. Double-paged spreads bleed to the ends of pages, with text effectively placed either within the art or outside a casual, page-appropriate line border. Like many parables, this one is told in hyperbole. It's also entertaining, making the truth of Herbert's new maturity easy to appreciate. Great fun for read alouds or independent reading.

From Booklist:

Ages 5-7. Cheerful, optimistic "Lucky" Morgenstern discovers, to his horror, that his first name is actually Herbert and that "Lucky" is only a nickname given to him by his beloved grandfather. Derailed by the news, Herbert begins to expect bad luck, and when it arrives, he wallows in it "like a pig in mud." Ernst's pastel, ink, and colored pencil artwork catches the ups and downs of Herbert's world. The pictures also reveal how fortunate the boy is to have such a patient and loving grandfather, and when Herbert sees that, too, his luck changes. Mary Harris Veeder
