Reviewed with Jane Burton's My Puppy Friends.
Ages 2-4. These concept board books use endearing pictures of baby animals to make common behaviors more understandable to the very young. To keep kids focused on the postures and expressions in the photos, the pictures are set against plain white backgrounds. A single word faces each photo: for example, a kitten, with its rosy pink tongue extended, appears opposite the word rude. Kitten is slightly more successful than Puppy, as its photos correspond more closely to the words, but both books will find a ready kid audience and also elicit some chuckles from grown-ups. Not mandatory purchases, but charming and competently done. Stephanie Zvirin

My Kitten Friends board book, photos by Jane Burton, interprets the facial expressions of various felines. On each spread, a descriptive word ("sneaky," "scared," "rude," etc.) pops out of the bright background; on the right, a kitten appears against a white background. For dog lovers, there's My Puppy Friends. (Mar.)
