From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5–In telling the story of the 13-day siege itself, the few months of skirmishes preceding the revolution, and the definitive battles at Goliad and San Jacinto following the fall of the Alamo, Redmond admirably conveys the megalomania of Mexican president Santa Anna set against the resolve of the 189 Texan and Tejano men willing to fight to the death for independence. Despite numerous exclamations ("It wasn't fair!"; "Texas was free at last!"), the narrative is readable. However, the colloquial expressions and the sections of the Texas Declaration and letters from Colonel William Travis and President Santa Anna make this hi-lo reader daunting. An insufficient number of illustrations and the lack of supplemental material (glossary, time line) make it difficult to grasp the actual historical material. Michael Burgan's The Alamo (Compass Point, 2001) is a far more inviting stepping-stone for young readers.–John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX
