The sun has been shining on our planet for millions of years. It gives us light and keeps us warm. Without the sun, there would be no plants or animals. Without the sun, there would be no life on Earth. What is the sun? the sun is a star. It is out daytime star, the star closest of all to Earth. Find out what the sun is made of. Find out how hot it is, how far away it is , and how long it takes for light from the sun to reach Earth. Do an experiment to prove that light from the sun makes things grow. All you need are two paper cups, soil, water, some beans, and some sunlight. Distinguished science writer Franklyn M. Branley and artist Don Madden team up t take a look at a star that is very important to us--the sun.

About the Author:

Franklyn M. Branley was the originator of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series and the author of close to 150 popular books about scientific topics for young readers of all ages. He was Astronomer Emeritus and former Chairman of the American Museum of Natural History-Hayden Planetarium.

From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2 This new edition features lively and inviting illustrations by Madden. Unfortunately, the drawings take some poetic license and portray the sun spewing out what look like flames. Since the sun isn't on fire there isn't enough oxygen this is misleading to young readers. This one error is more than compensated for by Branley's enthusiastic description of our sun. Sprinkled throughout the text are lots of gee-whiz facts to keep children interested. In addition, a simple experiment, showing the importance of light on plant growth, demonstrates the connections between life on Earth and our sun. There is even a mention of solar energy.
